Microsoft Is Going In Heavy On The Metaverse

Microsoft has acquired gaming company “Activision Blizzard” for 70 billion dollars, give or take, in an all-cash deal. This marks the largest company acquisition Microsoft has ever made. For comparison, Microsoft’s acquisition of Linkedin was “just” 26 billion dollars back in 2016, and its other famous purchase of Nokia was for just 7.2 billion dollars back in 2013. Microsoft is now the 3rd largest gaming in the world behind Tencent and Sony. This purchase is so large it’s a bet the company type move. So, if you’re paying attention, Facebook recently changed its name to “Meta” while Microsoft bought one of the most popular gaming companies of all time. Activision Blizzard is the creator of world-famous games like World of Warcraft, StarCraft, and Guitar Hero, which are massively popular.

Previously people lived in digital worlds by playing video games, but now companies like Microsoft understand that the world is changing into an actual virtual metaverse. Microsoft wants to make sure it’s not going to be left behind, hence its purchase of Activision Blizzard.

When the CEO of Activision Blizzard, Satya Nadella was asked to comment regarding the coming virtual world, he said “When we think about our vision for what a metaverse can be, we believe there won’t be a single centralized metaverse.” These large companies know that there’s going to be interoperability and open-source software, but it’s comforting for Microsoft to know that it will have intellectual property in the metaverse with Activision Blizzard. How did the markets react to this news? Activision Blizzard is trading up big by a high percentage meanwhile Microsoft shares are down a bit as perhaps legacy investors are sceptical and don’t like the idea of the metaverse. However, as we have seen several times in our lives, the big money comes from making big risky moves and Microsoft is going all-in on the metaverse.
